Did You Know That
More than 48 million people in the United States have a hearing, speech and/or language impairment.
Out of every 1000 people, 95 are likely to have a chronic hearing loss.
Most people with communication disorders can be helped. Rehabilitation for these impairments includes medical and surgical treatment, hearing aids, and speech and hearing therapy.
An average of three out of every 100 school children are affected by hearing impairments. (A second three out of 10 children suffer from middle ear infections which may cause a temporary hearing loss.)
Communications disorders affect more people than any other handicapping condition.
The prevalence of speech sound disorders in young children is 8 to 9%; the majority have no known cause.
Reading impairments have been widely shown to be associated with specific language impairment.
